Surgent CPE Awards Susan Smith the 2019 James L. McCoy Discussion Leader of the Year.

Surgent is a leader in the field of continuing professional education (CPE) for CPAs and other financial professionals. Surgent’s Discussion Leaders lead live CPE courses, ensuring that course attendees take away the critical educational points and practical application insights that they need to stay up-to-date and informed in their careers. The McCoy Award recognizes the highest rated Surgent Discussion Leader across numerous CPE topics. This award marks the 14th year that Surgent CPE has recognized the company’s top Discussion Leader with this honor.

Having previously won in 2008, 2014, and 2017, this marks the fourth time that Ms. Smith has received this honor. She has also received the Surgent Outstanding Discussion Leader Award in 2015, 2016, and 2018 in recognition of her consistently high evaluations for knowledge and presentation skills. In 2019, Ms. Smith traveled to 28 different states to lead 109 live seminars, covering 49 different courses, while maintaining an impressive 4.8/5 instructor rating.

In addition to her extensive work as a Surgent CPE Discussion Leader, Ms. Smith manages her own firm, which specializes in tax planning for individuals and business owners, and she is a frequent speaker at tax conferences across the country. Previously, Ms. Smith was a senior manager in the tax departments of PWC and Peat Marwick (predecessor of KPMG), and was also an adjunct professor at Widener University in the master’s taxation program. Michael D. Matthews, Director of Professional Development, noted that “It’s quite astonishing that Sue has maintained such high feedback scores given the large volume and variety of courses that she teaches.”

Surgent CPE is also pleased to recognize an additional nineteen Surgent Discussion Leaders who have qualified for the Outstanding Discussion Leader status for 2019. This status is granted for teaching at least 15 seminar dates and maintaining average scores of at least 4.5 out of 5.0 in both the speaker knowledge and presentation skills categories.
