Alaska CPA CPE requirements

CPAs must complete CPE learning each biennial period to maintain an active license. Alaska CPE requirements dictate a total of 80 credit hours every two years, with a minimum of 20 hours completed each year.

Biennial CPE requirements

Further stipulations for the two-year CPE reporting period include:

  • Completing a minimum of 20 hours of CPE each year
  • Completing at least 4 hours of ethics CPE every two years
  • No more than 30 hours of CPE earned through instruction
  • No more than 10 hours combined from micro-learning courses under one hour in length

Renewing your Alaska CPA license

All CPAs must complete and report their Alaska CPA CPE requirements and apply for CPA license renewal every two years. Licenses expire on Dec. 31 of odd-numbered years, regardless of when the license was first issued.

CPE must be completed by Dec. 31 of the expiration year. CPAs receive mailed renewal notifications at least 30 days before expiration.

Alaska ethics CPE

Alaska requires at least 4 hours of ethics CPE every two-year renewal period. CPAs can fulfill this requirement with qualifying ethics courses. Ethics courses do not need to be Alaska-specific.

Acceptable programs of study

Alaska does not pre-approve continuing education programs or sponsors. The state accepts courses from NASBA-QAS sponsors. To qualify for board approval, a subject must contribute directly to the professional competence of a person licensed to practice as a CPA.

Alaska’s Board of Public Accountancy conducts random audits of licensees’ continuing education. CPAs selected for a random audit receive written notification and have 30 days to submit CPE documentation to the board.

CPE PLANNING TIPS

Tips to Meet Your  CPE Requirements

Completing your CPE requirements takes time and investment. These strategies can help remove stress and maximize your learning.

Find CPE That Suits Your Schedule

Finding time to complete CPE courses can be difficult for CPAs with demanding professional and personal schedules. On-demand CPE courses allow you to watch and learn whenever it's convenient. Self-paced learning formats provide flexibility to fit continuing education into busy work and personal commitments.

Keep Up with Your Progress

Tracking which credits you've completed and what remains can be challenging. Using a CPE compliance tracker makes it easy to manage earned credits and identify remaining requirements in one place. You can upload credits completed on other platforms and browse recommendations for additional courses that meet your requirements.

Block Out Time Each Month

Pacing yourself throughout the year prevents last-minute rushing. Setting aside time each month for the hours requirement creates a manageable schedule and provides a cushion for unexpected circumstances. This approach gives you time to plan courses that interest you and make the most of your learning.

Consider What You Want to Learn

Meeting CPE requirements offers an opportunity to advance your career in subjects that interest you. CPE courses teach specialized skillsets and niche knowledge, equipping you to shift your career path or focus in a new direction. Find the specialization that inspires you and access CPE courses that build your career.
