Start with what each tier actually includes
Becker prices by content depth: the lower tiers cost less because they include less. Prime
at $799 carries the full catalog. Select at $499 drops premium content, the compliance
tracker, and evening or weekend webcasts. Essentials at $329 runs 90 days and drops
industry-specific courses.
Surgent prices by format instead: every tier carries full depth in the formats it includes.
Unlimited PLUS at $899 covers everything; Unlimited Webinars and Unlimited Self-Study narrow
the format without thinning the catalog.
That difference means the fair price comparison is Prime against Unlimited PLUS, not
Becker's cheapest tier against Surgent's most expensive one.
Where the catalogs differ most
| Dimension | Surgent Unlimited PLUS | Becker Prime |
|---|
| Live programming | 2,300+ webinars annually, 8,500+ credits | 1,000+ webcasts annually |
| Compliance tracking | Not published | Included, tracks credits from any provider |
| Term length | 12 months | 12 or 24 months |
| State-specific ethics | Included | Included at Prime, excluded at Essentials |
| Specialty format | Gamified and interactive courses | Podcast CPE |
The multi-year question
Becker is the only one of the two offering a standing multi-year term, at $1,429 for 24
months, an effective $714.50 per year, a 10.6 percent discount against buying two annual
terms separately. Surgent currently sells 12-month terms only.
For a licensee in a biennial reporting state, that structural difference is worth more than
a marginal price gap on the annual tiers.
If multi-provider tracking matters
Becker's compliance tracker is a genuinely distinct feature; it consolidates credit earned
from any provider, not just its own catalog. For someone who deliberately buys CPE from more
than one source, that is not something Surgent currently replicates.
If live programming volume matters more
Surgent publishes more than double Becker's live webinar count, scheduled across time zones
including evenings and weekends. For a CPA who prefers live instruction and real-time Q&A
over recorded content, that gap is the more consequential number in the comparison.
A quick way to frame the decision
| Priority | Likely fit |
|---|
| Heaviest possible live programming | Surgent Unlimited PLUS |
| Tracking credits from multiple providers | Becker Prime |
| Prepaying against a two-year reporting cycle | Becker Prime 2-Year |
| Full catalog depth in every format for one year | Surgent Unlimited PLUS |
What each provider excludes
Both companies carve certain products out of their unlimited subscriptions, and the
exclusions matter more than the headline course counts. Surgent excludes certificate
programs, the Annual Tax Refresher, and select interactive titles from Unlimited PLUS.
Becker excludes certificate programs and several partnership products from Prime. Reading
the current exclusion footnote on either provider's page settles more than comparing catalog
totals does.
Neither figure tells the whole story alone
Surgent publishes credit hours; Becker publishes course counts. A
credit is 50 minutes; a course can run
anywhere from 1 credit to 8. Comparing 10,000+ credits against 1,700+ courses by dividing one
into the other produces a meaningless number. The
dimension tables above are the more
reliable basis for comparison than the headline totals.
